There’s a holistic chemistry to their work that lies just under the surface that gives “Parallel Lives” a subtly pretty and sad aura. An echoed steel drum ebbs and flows gently, with synth lines and warm bass added to Hemming’s soft monotone as the song progresses. Hearing it feels like listening to a prism. “Parallel Lives” is a song about dreams, and Hemming’s lyrics allude to their destructive power without veering into cheesy territory: “If they could dream like I dream/ They would melt into dust, they would melt into dirt, they would melt into air”.
